Topical treatments
Does minoxidil work?
It can thicken pattern hair loss while you use it. It is not a cure, and the shed in the first weeks is a known annoyance.
Written in the UK, for women and men.
Yes, minoxidil can work for pattern hair loss, and the NHS names it as a main treatment. It does not work for everyone, it only works while you use it, and it is not always available on the NHS. NICE says men usually buy the 5% solution or foam themselves.
See a GP if hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with illness, a rash, or other symptoms. The NHS asks for that conversation before a private clinic.

Minoxidil is the lotion or foam people mean when they ask if “the pharmacy treatment” works. For pattern hair loss, the NHS puts it alongside finasteride as a main treatment for men, and says it can also be used for female pattern baldness.
Does minoxidil regrow hair?
It can increase hair in pattern loss while you keep using it. The NHS is plain about the limits: treatments do not work for everyone, they only work for as long as they are used, and they are not all available on the NHS. No treatment is 100% effective.
The British Association of Dermatologists says 5% minoxidil liquid or foam is not an NHS prescription item. Use it for at least 6 months, and possibly up to 12, before you decide. Any benefit continues only while you use it. Some people shed more in the first 4 to 6 weeks. Skin reactions happen.
What do men and women use?
NICE CKS describes, for male pattern hair loss, minoxidil 5% solution for ages 18 to 65 or 5% foam for ages 18 to 49, continued or the improvement reverses. Treatment is not available as routine NHS care. You buy it, or you use a private prescription. That is a description of the NHS position, not a dose to start without reading the packet and, if you are unsure, asking a pharmacist.
Women are offered minoxidil for female pattern loss on the NHS page. They are told not to use finasteride. The right product strength is on the label for the person it was sold for. This page is not a prescription.
How does it compare with a red light hat?
They are different tools. Trials of red light against minoxidil do not all agree, and adding light to minoxidil is not a settled win. The write-up is red light or minoxidil. If you still want a hat, the devices are compared on red light hats.
Oral minoxidil is a tablet for blood pressure, used off-label by some specialists. It is not this foam. Read oral minoxidil before you treat a clinic dose as advice.
What should you do if the loss is not a pattern?
Minoxidil is for pattern loss. A sudden shed, patches, or illness belongs with a GP first. The NHS asks for that conversation before a commercial clinic.
Common questions
Does minoxidil work for women?
The NHS says minoxidil can be used for female pattern baldness. Women should not use finasteride.
Can I get minoxidil on the NHS?
NICE CKS says topical minoxidil for male pattern hair loss is not usually prescribed in NHS primary care. People buy it from a pharmacy, or pay privately.
What if I stop minoxidil?
The NHS and the British Association of Dermatologists both say the benefit lasts only while you use it. Hair loss returns when you stop.
