Supplements

Supplements and hair growth

A supplement helps when you are short of something. It does not replace minoxidil, and a gummy is not a diagnosis.

Written in the UK, for women and men.

Most people do not need a hair supplement for pattern hair loss. The NHS expects biotin, zinc and iron to come from food unless a blood test shows a problem. Nutrafol, Viviscal and Hairburst are brand supplements, not NHS treatments.

See a GP if hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with illness, a rash, or other symptoms. The NHS asks for that conversation before a private clinic.

Pattern hair loss is not a vitamin deficiency. A shed can be, sometimes. The pages in this section keep those apart.

What are people taking?

SupplementWhat we can say
BiotinThe NHS says most people get what they need from diet and gut bacteria. Deficiency is rare.
IronHair loss is a less common symptom of iron deficiency anaemia. See a GP. Do not guess a ferritin target.
Vitamin DThe NHS advises 10 micrograms in autumn and winter for bones. That advice is not a hair-growth claim.
ZincThe NHS gives a daily amount from food, and a ceiling for supplements. It is not a hair medicine.
Collagen and marine proteinSold for hair and skin. Not NHS treatments for pattern loss.
Nutrafol, Viviscal, HairburstBrand supplements, not NHS treatments.

When is a supplement the right conversation?

When a clinician has found a shortage, or when your diet clearly misses a food group. Iron deficiency is the example the NHS names alongside hair loss. Foods for hair growth is the everyday version of the same idea.

High-dose biotin is a particular nuisance. The NIH fact sheet says it can skew lab tests. Mention it before a thyroid test.

A sensible limit

Gummies do not get a ranking or a made-up improvement figure, and a dose above the NHS ceiling is not the advice. If a brand’s advert shows a number, look for the paper behind it.

Common questions

What is the best hair supplement in the UK?

There is no NHS ranking. If a blood test shows iron deficiency, the treatment is the one your GP recommends. A general hair gummy is not that treatment.

Can biotin affect a blood test?

Yes. The US National Institutes of Health notes that biotin can interfere with some lab tests, including thyroid tests. Tell the clinician what you take.

Are collagen and marine protein NHS treatments?

No. They are food supplements. There isn’t a trial quoted here that says they regrow pattern hair.
